General advice

First, some important tips:

If you decide to devote an hour to party crafts during a celebration, it is probably smart to put it in between more physical activity, such as a series of relay races or a treasure hunt and before the cake and ice cream to offer an incentive and leave time to finish the project.

For older children, it is also important to verify if the birthday boy or girl is interested in making crafts for parties of this particular type. If the birthday girl doesn’t want to make a t-shirt, for example, it will be a challenge to attract her friends to follow your example.

The following holiday craft ideas can work for a wide range of ages and skill levels. Some require more guidance and supervision than others, so keep that in mind when planning the party. In addition, to help you stay within budget, encourage parents to confirm their attendance in advance and inform them if a brother will accompany them. You have to secure a lot of materials for everyone, but without spending too much.

Paper soccer

Paper soccer, sometimes called with other names like soccer for fingers, is a timeless and traditional American game. Two opponents take turns trying to score a touchdown by sliding a small triangle of folded paper (the “ball”) towards the opposite edges of a table so that it hangs without falling. After a touchdown, the scorer has the opportunity to pass the “ball” through a field gate that the opponent makes with his fingers. Excited to play? All you need is the ball.

Here’s how to make a soccer ball:

Take a sheet of paper for printer or notebook.
Fold the paper in half lengthwise. You have a long thin rectangle.
Tear or cut the paper along the fold. Now it has two strips about four inches (10 centimeters) wide. Put a strip aside.

Fold a strip of paper in half lengthwise. It has a strip about two inches (5 centimeters) wide. Fold each fold in this project firmly to achieve a thin or slightly soccer ball for a fan.
Fold the upper right corner of the strip towards the left edge, forming a triangle.
Fold the top point of the triangle down along the left edge, over the previous fold, so that you have a triangle again. Fold the upper left corner of the strip (which should also be the upper left corner of your triangle) towards the right edge of the paper. Again you have a triangle.
Fold the top point of the triangle down along the right edge over the previous fold. You still have a triangle.
Repeat steps 5 through 7 and you should reach the end of the paper strip.
Insert the additional paper into the “pocket” created from its folding.
Repeat steps 4 through 9 to make a copy of the soccer ball for when you lose the first ball.
Play the ball!
